What Iyengar Entails
Iyengar yoga treats the pose as a question and the props as the answer. A strap teaches the shoulders where straight is; a chair makes inversions safe for a sixty-year-old spine. Holds are long, instructions are exact, and progress is unmistakable.
Grace's Monday and Wednesday labs focus on one family of poses per month — standing poses in spring, backbends in summer — so understanding compounds.

What a Class Holds
- A monthly focus — e.g. four weeks on twists or inversions
- Full prop wall: ropes, chairs, bolsters, belts and blocks
- Demonstration first, then guided holds with individual correction
- Supported inversions for circulation and calm
- A take-home sequence card to repeat twice that week
Levels & Rhythm
Iyengar welcomes stiff beginners, cautious returners and detail-loving athletes equally. If you are working around an injury, book a fifteen-minute assessment with Grace before your first lab — she will map your modifications so you can join the group safely from day one.
When we practise
- Iyengar Lab: Monday & Wednesday at 18:00
- Restorative (Iyengar lineage): Tuesday at 12:15, Friday at 19:30
- Private assessments: by appointment via the contact page
What are all the props for?
They bring the pose to your body instead of forcing your body into the pose — support, feedback and safe range, all at once.
I have a herniated disc / bad knee. Can I come?
Very often yes — this is the tradition physiotherapists recommend. Book the assessment first so Grace can plan your session.
Will I sweat?
Mildly. Iyengar builds stamina through long holds rather than pace; expect shaky legs and a quiet mind.
